Mixed Media Abstract Painting "Billboard 2" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is a new series of work I'm starting based on billboards and sign boards.  Some times, there are layers of signs, posters or notices that are not completely removed, giving a ragged hodge podge of images.  Fertile ground for an abstract mixed media artist!

This painting is on a cradled wood panel, and arrives ready to hang or display on a small easel.

Update:  This painting just won an award in the Bold Brush Painting Competition.  It was included in the "Favorite 15%."

Mixed Media Abstract Collage, "Forest Floor" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Forest Floor" 8x8 mm collage by Carol Nelson

This is another mixed media collage featuring the air dry clay leaves that I teach students in my mixed media workshops.

A cradled wood panel is an especially good substrate for this type of work because it is a non-flexible solid surface that can support the weight of all the collage materials.

Study with Carol Nelson on beautiful Madeline Island in Northern Wisconsin, July 7-13

10x10 inches, Carol Nelson
6x12 inches, Carol Nelson

These abstract tree collage paintings are just one of the many projects we will do in my upcoming July workshop at Madeline Island School for the Arts (MISA). Come join me for a week of fun, learning and creativity on beautiful Madeline Island in northern Wisconsin.

Want to put the WOW factor in your abstract compositions? This workshop will cover composition and color theory fundamentals, and you will learn how use of a few simple rules can make your abstract work more structurally sound and visually appealing. Regardless of your painting experience, this workshop is a must for anyone venturing into the exciting world of abstract painting.

For five days, we will work on a series of projects featuring the mixed media techniques Carol uses in her paintings. Students can expect to complete one or more paintings per day. You will learn about a variety of materials and techniques, such as preparation of Tyvek, painting on aluminum foil, embossed foils, combusted origami foil, rusted iron paint, making your own unique collage papers, making focal medallions using air dry clay and Plaster of Paris, inexpensive substitutes for pricey art materials, and much more.

Carol will also discuss abstract composition and color theory, various kinds of supports, how to attach collage elements, and presentation options for a finished piece.  Learn her "sandwich technique" which takes the fear and uncertainty out of abstract painting and lets you be FREE to express YOUR unique creativity.

Mixed Media Abstract Collage, "Billboard 4" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Billboard 4" 24x18 acrylic collage by Carol Nelson

This abstract collage is the latest in my billboard series. I really enjoy doing collage which, as I see it, is just a series of arranging and gluing papers in a pleasing composition.

Most of the papers were left over scraps from other projects - some failed paintings I had done on paper, others, printed papers I had collected over the years.

Mixed media abstract painting, "Headlines" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

Mixed media abstract painting, "Headlines" by Carol Nelson

When you think about it, artists who paint in a realistic style, pretty much know when their painting is done.  They paint a still life or a landscape, and when they have achieved their best representation of that subject, they're done.

With abstracts, the point of being done is open to interpretation.
I'm reminded of a story about abstract expressionist Robert Rauschenberg.

He was house sitting for his friend and mentor, Marcel Duchamp, who was visiting in France.  Rauschenberg noticed a painting he had done hanging in Duchamp's home.  Since Rauschenberg was in his "black period", he PAINTED OVER the original painting with thick black paint.  Duchamp was not pleased with the redo of the painting.

Thus it is with paintings I have hanging in my home. I look at them critically all the time.  How could I make them better?  "Headlines" just came back from a gallery, where it did not sell.  This is what it looked like:

I actually like the first version, but I thought the MAUVE color might be the reason it had not found a home. I added tones of gold, sepia, and umber.

Mixed Media Abstract Collage, "Billboard 6" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Billboard 6" 30x40 abstract by Caro Nelson

This is the sixth in my Billboard Series of abstract, geometric collages. Each one is a puzzle to create. Most of the papers are hand altered before use.

Moving them around, painting over them, tearing things off, adjusting values and colors - it's all part of the creative process of collage that I love.

This painting has a little message:  "Don't compare your Chapter 1 with someone else's Chapter 20."  I see that all the time in my teaching.  Beginning students want their work to look just like the teacher's work IMMEDIATELY.  Developing your art is a multi-year process.  Chapter 1 is only the beginning.

Mixed Media Collage, "Imagine" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Imagine" 10x10 mixed media collage by Carol Nelson

This piece was a demo for my recent workshop in New Braunfels, Texas. My favorite part about this painting is the turquoise.

One of the students had a bottle of Lucas Cryl Acrylic. They make a turquoise color I find irresistible. It's different from my Golden Fluid acrylics because it is very opaque. In this painting, I painted it on a piece of red rosin paper and had excellent coverage.
