"Industrial Chic 2," 36x44 mixed media by Carol Nelson

This is a commission painting I did for collectors looking for an industrial grunge look. Heavy in texture, the painting also has 3 aluminum metal panels at the top (they look white in the photo) that wrap around the sides. The central red feature has 9 glass tiles in shades of gold, beige and taupe. The central black vertical feature is covered with clear epoxy resin, giving a smooth glass-like finish that contrasts with the rough texture in the rest of the painting.

Acrylic Geologic Abstract Painting "Turquoise Ridge" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is a demo I did in my recent Dallas workshop.  As often happens, when I get home from the workshop, I have time to take a more critical look at the painting, and make adjustments if necessary.

This one needed color and value adjustments.  The composition was set in stone, as it were, because of the textured sculpted areas.

Mixed Media Abstract Landscape Painting "Frosty Morning" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

This is another in my mixed media tree series.  There are some sparkly elements in it, such as aluminum foil and a glitter paper, all covered with a layer of crystal clear epoxy resin.

Mounted on a 1/2 inch backing board, it arrives ready to hang.

Mixed Media Geologic Abstract Painting "Arroyo" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

This painting is a large (48x36 inch) triptych on three wood panels, each measuring 48x12 inches.  I added a LOT of texture, including gritty modeling compound, rocks, and glass blobs.

The most exciting thing about this painting is hardly even visible in a photo.  The area around the rocks has a pouring of epoxy resin resembling water.

This is the sixth in my Billboard Series of abstract, geometric collages. Each one is a puzzle to create. Most of the papers are hand altered before use.

Moving them around, painting over them, tearing things off, adjusting values and colors - it's all part of the creative process of collage that I love.

This painting has a little message:  "Don't compare your Chapter 1 with someone else's Chapter 20."  I see that all the time in my teaching.  Beginning students want their work to look just like the teacher's work IMMEDIATELY.  Developing your art is a multi-year process.  Chapter 1 is only the beginning.

Geological Abstract Art Painting "GOLDEN MANTLE" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

This triptych is on 3 gallery wrapped canvases of varying widths of 8 inches, 18 inches and 24 inches. Each canvas is 24 inches in height and 1.5 inches in depth. Final dimensions of the piece, not counting spacing between the canvases are 24 inches tall and 50 inches wide. The heavy texture was achieved using flexible modeling paste and rug backing for the pattern. The metallic elements are metal leaf in gold and copper.
