Metals and Mixed Media Contemporary Abstract, "Metalworks" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Metalworks" 10x10 by Carol Nelson

I had to do this painting as an example for my Metals and Mixed Media class next week in Phoenix. It has aluminum wire pounded into a random design, and some metal washers, in the central goldish stripe. These were covered with aluminum foil pressed around each object, and then antiqued with Golden High Flow Sepia. I love that paint for antiquing.

The orange foil was embossed with a swirl design before painting with Golden Fluids: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold and Transparent Red Oxide.

There is also some uncolored aluminum foil that was antiqued with Golden Fluid Carbon Black. The two fancy patterned papers were purchased at an art supply store.

Mixed Media Abstract Collage, "Billboard 4" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Billboard 4" 24x18 acrylic collage by Carol Nelson

This abstract collage is the latest in my billboard series. I really enjoy doing collage which, as I see it, is just a series of arranging and gluing papers in a pleasing composition.

Most of the papers were left over scraps from other projects - some failed paintings I had done on paper, others, printed papers I had collected over the years.

Mixed Media Abstract Collage, "Billboard 6" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Billboard 6" 30x40 abstract by Caro Nelson

This is the sixth in my Billboard Series of abstract, geometric collages. Each one is a puzzle to create. Most of the papers are hand altered before use.

Moving them around, painting over them, tearing things off, adjusting values and colors - it's all part of the creative process of collage that I love.

This painting has a little message:  "Don't compare your Chapter 1 with someone else's Chapter 20."  I see that all the time in my teaching.  Beginning students want their work to look just like the teacher's work IMMEDIATELY.  Developing your art is a multi-year process.  Chapter 1 is only the beginning.

IT'S HERE!!!!! Carol Nelson's Long Awaited Instructional Video......

I've chosen some of my favorite paintings to be made into bite-sized reproductions.
In this collection of small canvas prints, each one arrives with its own little easel back.

The prints measure 6x6 or 5x7 inches, and are just perfect for adding a spot of artful color in  any nook or cranny in your home.

Canvas Minis are made of a high-resolution canvas, mounted on a flexible black plastic  backing.  They look great without a frame, but are standard sizes if you wish to present them  with a small frame.
