"Billboard 3" mixed media abstract collage painting by Carol Nelson

"Billboard 3" 14x9 mixed media

This painting was started in my last workshop in Wisconsin.  I had the class work with printed papers, altered papers, stencils, gestural marks and model their composition after a painting by Robert Rauschenberg.
It was fun to see all their work which was similar, yet had a lot of their own touches added in.

"Layers 2" mixed media abstract collage by Carol Nelson

"Layers 2"

When I was in New Orleans last October for the Golden Art Educators training, there were a number of artists in the group who were very good at this type of collage technique.

It looks so easy, but it is NOT.  The layering of different collage elements, bringing some forward, pushing some back, does not come easily to me.  I need lots more practice.

I'm just starting to experiment with gestural marks.  In this case, I started with some scribbles from an oil stick.  Later in the process, I used color shapers to inscribe the circles in the upper left quadrant.  This is a timing issue.  The bottom layer must be dry when you apply another layer.  When the top layer is still wet, you can draw into it and the bottom layer will show through.

The painting is on wc paper, and mounted on wood panel.  There are a number of artists who work this way.  The nice thing about painting on paper, followed by mounting, is that you don't mount
anything that is not successful to you the artist.

"Flaming Gorge" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

Flaming Gorge

This painting has a strong geologic feel to it, even though it is abstract.  I started out with a layer of metal leaf .  I'm sorry it's so hard to see the shine of the metal leaf in a photograph.

Then I painted several transparent and opaque layers, using water misting to get the paint to flow and a stream of hot air from a hair dryer to somewhat direct the flow.  Reminded me of herding cats (not that I've ever done that.)

Dance Of The Dragonfly by Leada Wood, Artist of Texas

Dance Of The Dragonfly ©Leada Wood

This painting is done with liquid acrylics on illustration board. I used lots of textures, layering of paint and dripping paint to acheive the end results. I also did some drawing underneath with wax to give a little line and direction to the design. This award winning painting is sold but you can have a print of it.
