Metals and Mixed Media Contemporary Abstract, "Metalworks" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Metalworks" 10x10 by Carol Nelson

I had to do this painting as an example for my Metals and Mixed Media class next week in Phoenix. It has aluminum wire pounded into a random design, and some metal washers, in the central goldish stripe. These were covered with aluminum foil pressed around each object, and then antiqued with Golden High Flow Sepia. I love that paint for antiquing.

The orange foil was embossed with a swirl design before painting with Golden Fluids: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold and Transparent Red Oxide.

There is also some uncolored aluminum foil that was antiqued with Golden Fluid Carbon Black. The two fancy patterned papers were purchased at an art supply store.

Mixed Media Abstract Painting, "Cattywampus" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

Mixed media abstract, "Cattywampus", by Carol Nelson

It's not very often that I start out with cool colors - blues, greens, etc. For this painting I wanted to demonstrate the idea of having the focal point being the color compliment of the rest of the painting.

Mixed Media Abstract Painting "Billboard 2" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

This is a new series of work I'm starting based on billboards and sign boards.  Some times, there are layers of signs, posters or notices that are not completely removed, giving a ragged hodge podge of images.  Fertile ground for an abstract mixed media artist!

This painting is on a cradled wood panel, and arrives ready to hang or display on a small easel.

Update:  This painting just won an award in the Bold Brush Painting Competition.  It was included in the "Favorite 15%."

Mixed Media Abstract Painting, "Industrial Chic 2" by Colorado Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson

"Industrial Chic 2," 36x44 mixed media by Carol Nelson

This is a commission painting I did for collectors looking for an industrial grunge look. Heavy in texture, the painting also has 3 aluminum metal panels at the top (they look white in the photo) that wrap around the sides. The central red feature has 9 glass tiles in shades of gold, beige and taupe. The central black vertical feature is covered with clear epoxy resin, giving a smooth glass-like finish that contrasts with the rough texture in the rest of the painting.

Faux Batik Painting, "Autumn Glow" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson

"Autumn Glow," faux batik painting by Carol Nelson

This painting was a demo for a faux batik class I taught recently.
If you look carefully, you can see random lines in green, ochre, and turquoise that result from the batik process.

In this example, the painting is done on fabric, the processed with wax, paint, and polymer medium for a unique look. I love the unpredictability of this process.
