"Seductive Sediment", 60 x 40, by Carol Nelson

This painting is taller than I am, so it was a bit of a struggle for me to handle.  I found the inspiration for this painting in a slab of rock that I purchased at a gem and mineral show.
The pattern and colors were so bold, I just knew I had to paint it.

What you can't see very well in the photographs are the heavy texture, the sparkling glass and mica chips, even the 50,000 year old fossilized fish.

Media Geologic Abstract "Petroglyphs", © Carol Nelson Fine Art

 

"Petroglyphs" , 24 x 18, by Carol Nelson

This mixed media piece is done in a neutral palette. The earthy brown tones warm up a generally cool gray, black and white palette. I started the painting by layering three kinds of paper on the canvas: brown packing paper, red rosin paper, and textured wallpaper.

Then I added some premixed stucco repair (found in the paint department at Home Depot). I was interested in how the three different papers and the texture medium would absorb the paint. Sometimes you are surprised how a single swish of paint can look so different depending on the absorption of the substrate. "Boulder Field", Geologic Abstract Painting © Carol Nelson Fine Art

 

Both of these geologic abstracts feature the same color palette.  It is not natural for me to paint in these soft colors, so it is a good exercise to do so.  Boulder Field is a collage with many different papers, heavy. body and fluid acrylics on a canvas board.  Chalk Cliff is painted with fluid acrylics on watercolor paper, and mounted on a cradled wood panel.

This modular abstract features aluminum, pewter embossing metal, blue steel cut tacks, acrylic modeling compound and metallic acrylic paints on a 24x24 panel.   Several shades of blue combine with browns, grays, and blacks for  a dramatic, contemporary look.  Simple black wood frame included.

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

This geologic abstract focuses on hand made clay pieces that resemble ancient pottery artifacts in an archeological dig.  At least, that's my artistic interpretation - my apologies to actual archeologists and geologists.

I just love the color palette in this one.  Can't go wrong with complements, right?  But notice in the turquoise section there is some olive green areas.  That's where I added some of the orange to the turquoise.  In the upper orange section, there are brown tones added.  There I added some Van Dyke brown to my orange mixture.  Those subtle color shifts soften the strong contrast of warm and cool tones.

This painting was a demo for a Geologic Abstract workshop I taught at Donna Downey Studio in North Carolina. You can see the heavy texture, including crackle paste, that I used to texture the rock forms. A recent discovery (at Michaels) was the broken mirror glass. I love the sparkle they give to this painting.

Mixed Media Abstract, "Golden Mantle" by Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson Fine Art

This triptych is on 3 gallery wrapped canvases of varying widths of 8 inches, 18 inches and 24 inches. Each canvas is 24 inches in height and 1.5 inches in depth. Final dimensions of the piece, not counting spacing between the canvases are 24 inches tall and 50 inches wide. The heavy texture was achieved using flexible modeling paste. 
The metallic elements are metal leaf in gold and copper, although they appear yellow in photos.

Mixed media geologic abstract, "Marble Palisade II" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Marble Palisade II", 12x9 inches, by Carol Nelson

This painting, measuring 12x9 inches, is a small version of a 36x36 inch painting I did a few years ago. The "marble" formations have a slight amount of iridescent pearl paint that gives them a glow when the lighting is right.

 Iridescent Pearl (Fine) is one of Golden's line of iridescent colors. I use the fluid acrylic version. I find they are excellent for adding a bit of shimmer to other colors. It's easy to overdo shimmer or shine, but that is harder to do with these paints because they are also quite transparent.
