"Golden Season" 12077, mixed media tree collage by Carol Nelson

Golden Season

This is a warm up for my mixed media tree workshop coming up this Friday and Saturday.  I wish the photo showed the cool paper I used on the background.

It's called red rosin paper and I found it at Home Depot.

"RED ROSIN PAPER is a high quality, single-ply sheathing paper, which is widely used in built-up roofing systems as a “first layer” protective barrier. This environmentally friendly paper is manufactured from 100% recycled fibers. The fibers are set in alum to resist bleeding. It is a multi-purpose building paper used as a physical barrier protection throughout all phases of general construction."

You know me, I'm always on the lookout for possible substitutes for expensive art materials.  This paper has kind of a rosy color and has a nice weight to it.

I actually bought a roll of this paper not to use in my work, but to use as a cover for my work table.  I had a sheet of it protecting my patio table as I was using spray paint on some other things.  I liked the look of the overspray areas.

My latest kick is using Rustoleum Hammered spray paint.  It's meant to go on metal, but it looks fantastic on paper too.  With the red rosin paper, I had to prime the paper with another color first before spraying the metallic hammered paint.

Beach Redhead, 12122, Figure on the Beach Oil Painting, by Texas Artist Nancy Standlee

Beach Redhead
Oil on Fredrix panel, 6"x8", needs a frame

Who could resist taking a photo of a redhead under these fabulous colored umbrellas? When my friend Suzy Pal and I flew to Florida for a collage workshop we had to make several trips to the beach for photos and she probably has one just like this on her computer. Someone in a recent workshop asked where I get all my photos and one good source if you and your friends don't share photos (see rest of post on my blog)

"Kaleidoscope"Abstract Painting By Donna Holdsworth

©2012Donna Holdsworth
This is a re-vamp of my painting Kaleidoscope.  I liked the transparency of the washes on the original.  I had it in my hallway but everytime I looked at it I felt it needed more.  So out came the acrylics.  I added a little of this and that and am much happier with it now.  I think it is richer and more interesting.  This painting is done on 20x24 textured stretched canvas.  UV gloss finish.  Purchase Info Here! or for before and after pics, visit my BLOG:  Donna Holdsworth Contemporary Art.  Thank you!

LIVELY TOPIARY by Dottie Martz, dottiefromvirginia

                                                     website:     http://dottiemartz.com

This was part of the mural work I did last week. This is downstairs in the hall and I painted upstairs in the daughter's bathroom.  unfortunately, that photo did not turn out.  it was of three friend standing in waist-deep water facing the ocean.  I will have to have the Mother send me a photo!

All my mural work is done in acrylics.  I only use varnish protection when it is painted on wood.
this was done on the wall and therefore it did not require varnish.

Mixed Media workshop with Carol Nelsoin

This is most of the enthusiastic group that was cuttin', and tearin', and pastn' in my torn paper collage workshop held at Judy Patti's studio in Littleton, CO.

That's me in the back row for a change (I was standing on a stool).
We learned about altering all kinds of papers from newsprint, to copy paper, to deli paper, to tissue paper, to tyvek, to metal foils for use in our mixed media masterpieces.

After altering our papers the first day, students were asked to create a collage of a single subject object - such as an animal, bird, flower, etc.  The second day, most felt brave enough to tackle an abstract composition.  I brought several examples of my own work which they were encouraged to copy if needed.

With so many mixed media materials to choose from, I took care to tell them to use a limited palette and a simple cruciform design pattern.  I told them that I would slap their hand if they put anything in the corners, the idea being to work out from the center of interest.

Often times, with abstract work, students aimlessly arrange the mixed media components without really thinking about composition.  That kind of approach leads to a mish mash of random placements - like a big hunk of tyvek stuck in the corner, for example, that in no way contributes to the whole design.

I also told them to pay attention to values.  Since these abstract works were layered with one paper element on top of another, it was very important to have darks on lights, and lights on darks.

My threat of corporal punishment worked because there were so many beautifully composed mixed media abstracts produced!  And some students had never even done this type of work before.  I was so proud of them.

"What's For Lunch" by Terry Honstead

I started this painting with a background done in joint compound with imprints of ordinary objects.  I added collage and then decided it looked like a giraffe so I went with that.  The background was a lot of fun to create in this way.  See more on http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/terry-honstead.html or email me at honstead@paulbunyan.net

Shaping UP by Linda Bell

This painting was done on a canvas that I had used for previous paintings - my experimental canvas. When this painting emerged I was thinking - well something is finally shaping up and thus the name. It is acrylic collage and has lots of texture from my previous experiments.

Two Sisters . . .

"Majestic Beauty" by Terry Honstead

This is a 11 x 14 mixed media piece that was lots of fun to do.  I started with washes and spray painted doilies and it looked so much like branches from a distance that I went with that.  I used tissue paper that I had painted with watercolor on the bottom for a layered look.  I finished off with black acrylic paint which I used to draw the tree.  You can see more at:  http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/terry-honstead.html  or email me at:honstead@paulbunyan.net.

Happiness Symbols by Leada Wood, Contemporary Artist Of Texas,

Happiness Symbols by Leada Wood©
www.leadawood.com/blog or www.leadawood.com
This is a new little Jewel, only 5X7 with a powerful punch and message. There are various symbols for happiness incorporated into this painting as well as the Japanese Kanji symbol for hapiness. This symbol can also be translated as blessed, welfare, well-being or fortunate.
I used the symbol of a man and woman, as I believe that one completes the other thus bringing happiness to each other. I used the coins for good fortune and prosperity.
The spiral is associated with the cycles of time, the seasons, cycle of birth, growth, death and then rebirth. Some also consider the spiral a symbol of a spiritual journey. Life doesn't progess in a straight line, it resembles a spiral. We seem to pass the same points over and over again with a different perspective each time.
The circle is an unbroken line which has no beginning, and no end which represents completeness.
The color orange is a power color! It stimulates creativity and enthusiasm. People who like orange are usually sincere and thoughtful. Lady Luck's color is orange.
The color turquoise is a friendly and happy color. It controls and heals the emotions creating stability and balance.
Can you believe one little Jewel has so much symbolism?

I enjoy doing mixed media with all it's layers, textures and symbolism.

"King" by Terry Honstead

This 11 x 15 mixed media piece is done on paper with many different kinds of papers.  After I put those down, I painted on them and then added modeling paste to an abstract sunflower stencil to represent the mane.  I then painted more and also drew on it to hint at the lion shape on the abstract design.  If you are interested in seeing more, you can do so at http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com/ or email me at  honstead@paulbunyan.net

"Two Twelve" mixed media abstract by Carol Nelson

Two Twelve

detail
detail

This is the second in my numbers series - mixed media abstracts that have a number component.  In this case the number is 2-12, which is the birthday of one of my daughters.  This painting started out as an unsuccessful collage that I deconstructed (that means I started tearing pieces off of it).

Usually, deconstruction is a last resort done when I can't get a mixed media piece to come together.  It's something I do when I know my actions could ruin the painting - but since the painting wasn't working out, I'm really not ruining anything.  Midway through the deconstruction, I thought a new potential painting was starting to show.  Actually, some of my most successful paintings have gone through a deconstruction phase.

You will notice several different materials in this piece including foam plate, tyvek, and several weights of paper, including some that I sprayed with Rustoleum Hammered Copper.  I love that spray paint and the very cool look it has.
