WE WERE THE RECIPIENTS OF A VISUAL DELIGHT WHILE DOWN IN AJO, ARIZONA DURING FEBRUARY AND MARCH.  MILES OF BRIGHT GOLD MEXICAN POPPIES CARPETED THE DESERT THIS YEAR DUE TO AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF RAIN IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY.  THIS EVIDENTLY ONLY HAPPENS ONCE EVERY 5-10 YEARS (that number depends on who you talk to :).

Original Mixed Media Poppy Painting, "Glow", by International Mixed Media Artist, Donna L. Martin

"Glow"

This is my latest creation, just completed yesterday.  Orange and yellow poppies set against a heavily textured background of gray, yellow, black, and white.  Thank you to Carol Nelson for teaching me how to do mixed media.  Without her, I'm not sure I would have continued painting!

This piece measures 18 X 24 X 1.5, comes ready to hang and is available for purchase.

This is one of the projects we're going to do in my Dallas workshop at The Artists Showplace next week.  The petals are sculpted with medium before painting, making a 3D effect.  These little 6x6inch paintings look so good in groups of three, or the same technique can be expanded into a larger work.

"ORANGE DREAM" poppy floral mixed media by Carol Nelson

Orange Dream

What fun I had with this vibrant floral painting! The flowers, vase and some other areas are made from used paper towels that I had cleaned my brush on.

The diagonals in the piece give an edgy quality that adds to the drama of the piece.  The closeup shows the texture of the paper towel (I use Viva) that closely resembles the weave of the canvas.
How cool is that?!
