Mixed Media Collage Landscape, "Raleigh Tree Demo" by Carol Nelson Fine Art

"Raleigh Tree Demo" , 10x10 inches, by Carol Nelson

As often happens, this is a painting I started in a class, but didn't have time to finish.  I just finished it here in my studio after 2 months!  This is typical of the collage treescapes we do in my Abstracted Trees workshop.

What I love most about this one is the color palette.  That green gold and purple combination is gorgeous.  The tree trunks are cut out of 98 lb mixed media paper.  I find that is the perfect weight paper for this work.

Notice the color gradations in the tree trunks.  I had two puddles of paint (Golden Fluid Acrylic):  dioxazine purple (with some white,) and green gold.  When you mix these two colors together you get that beautiful brownish gold color.  I LOVE that!  It's the perfect transition between the purple bottoms and the green tops of the trunks.

As often happens, this is a painting I started in a class, but didn't have time to finish.  I just finished it here in my studio after 2 months!  This is typical of the collage treescapes we do in my Abstracted Trees workshop.

Mixed Media Geologic Abstract, "Ancient Mysteries II" © Carol Nelson Fine Art

Here you can see THE MAGIC OF QUINACRIDONE NICKEL AZO GOLD fluid acrylic. Anyone who knows me knows that Golden's Quin Nickel Azo Gold is my favorite color. Here is an example why.

This painting has been hanging around my studio for 4 years. I originally painted it in shades of pink, mauve, and violet.  I hate pink, but wanted to prove that I could do it. Finally, I said to myself, Screw it. I'm going to give it the magic makeover.

I painted over most of the surface with Quin Gold (watered down a bit to add just a glaze of color).
I also added a little more light yellow-green, as seen near the center, and some more contour lines.

The new version is a palette I'm so much more comfortable with.  Now I won't cringe every time I look at this piece.

Textured mixed media landscape, "Autumn Trio”by Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson Fine Art

I am conflicted about this painting.  I was painting over a heavily textured painting that was not a favorite of mine.  The existing texture on the canvas dictated the composition to a degree.  I was hoping for something much more abstract than this turned out to be.

I started adding color and more texture material to cover up and blend in the existing texture.

  I turned the canvas, allowed drips, and painted wet into wet, searching for a composition

I should have studied the first photo more. Now I see that it had good composition that leads into the painting.  But as soon as I dripped in the trunk forms, I was committed to trees in the foreground.

What I didn't do was to stand the painting up on an easel and view it from afar after that initial application of texture material.  Always take time to do that, even if you have to wait a while for the very wet paint to dry.
