"Billboard 1" mixed media abstract collage painting by Carol Nelson

"Billboard 1"

This started out with me trying to remove some collaged papers from a wood panel using a razor blade and sand paper.  The paper that remained stuck on the panel suddenly presented itself as an artsy possibility.  You always have to be on the lookout when you're deconstructing a collage for new unplanned accidents.

I decided to work with what I had. I did a little stamping, and a little painting, and voila!

What can I say?  I could go on endlessly making variations of these colorful tree collages.  This was another demo for private students in my studio.  As a teacher, this tree technique is very satisfying because all my students have great success with it.

Small Contemporary Abstract Paintings by Melody Cleary, Oregon Artist

It's time again for the 5th annual Art Challenge at the Village Gallery in

Cedar Mill, Oregon.  Artists are challenged to create (4) cohesive pieces on 6 x 6 inch gallery

canvases that will hang vertically in their May show.  A percentage supports

capital improvements for the non-profit gallery.  These are only available for purchase

at the gallery, however, I can produce others in the same style if you're interested.

After some experimentation, I thought it'd be rather Asian looking, however,

the colors bring to mind bright Aftican prints as well.  Oh well, they are

multi-cultural!!  Each has a good luck coin for wealth and prosperity.

"Layers 2" mixed media abstract collage by Carol Nelson

"Layers 2"

When I was in New Orleans last October for the Golden Art Educators training, there were a number of artists in the group who were very good at this type of collage technique.

It looks so easy, but it is NOT.  The layering of different collage elements, bringing some forward, pushing some back, does not come easily to me.  I need lots more practice.

I'm just starting to experiment with gestural marks.  In this case, I started with some scribbles from an oil stick.  Later in the process, I used color shapers to inscribe the circles in the upper left quadrant.  This is a timing issue.  The bottom layer must be dry when you apply another layer.  When the top layer is still wet, you can draw into it and the bottom layer will show through.

The painting is on wc paper, and mounted on wood panel.  There are a number of artists who work this way.  The nice thing about painting on paper, followed by mounting, is that you don't mount
anything that is not successful to you the artist.
