"Cherish This Life", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

"Cherish This Life"

We recently lost someone very special to us.  My Father-in-Law, Mikey, was Italian, to the core.  He grew up in North Denver, in what was known as little Italy.  He worked at an Italian Bakery for much of his life and he fought in WWII, in Normandy.  He knew the Italian Mob Bosses in Denver, worked hard to raise his family, and he loved to gamble in Vegas.  He was pretty good at it too. He also loved to go dancing.  He went dancing almost every Saturday night up until about 4 months ago.

I know if we could talk to him again, he would tell us to live this life and appreciate it, because it is short.  As I've said before, this life is just a whisper of time.  So this is for you, Mikey, for a life well-lived and well-loved...we will cherish you and the life you lived forever.

This piece was created as a reminder to "Cherish This Life".  It was done with many layers of paint, inks, and painted paper.  The heart in the middle was cut from a vintage ceiling tile.  When the light catches it, you can see the hints of iridescent gold paint sprinkled throughout the painting.  The words, "Cherish This Life" are embedded into the painting.  It is framed in a gold and black floater frame.

"Stages of the Heart", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

      Stages of the Heart

This is an original mixed media piece I created after going through alot of grieving, feelings of loss, and healing after the death of a dear friend. It is titled "Stages of the Heart". The first Heart is "Hopeful", in thinking about the beginning of a relationship and wondering what the future might hold. It is a red heart made of Tyvek and burlap, painted red. The second heart is "Broken", and represents what I was feeling about death and loss. It is a purple heart made of broken windshield glass. It expresses alot of emotion. The third Heart is "Healing", signifying the healing that can happen after loss. It is made of some of the broken windshield glass and bandages. The piece was finished with a resin, which gave it alot of depth and made the colors "pop".  This is a very personal piece to me and helped me to express all the various emotions that I was feeling.

The original piece is sold.  Commissions are welcome.

"Truly, Madly, Deeply... Love", Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

      "Truly, Madly, Deeply...Love"

For some reason, I get on these kicks to create "Heart" work!  Maybe it's because I have a son who was born on Valentine's Day. I also seem to find "heart" shaped objects everywhere I go, and I get inspired.

Last year, I found this frame with the tin attached, at a summer market. It appears to be an old ceiling tile that they stapled to the inside of the frame.  It was the ideal inspiration, as I love combining old “things” and new artwork.  I knew this would be perfect for what I was thinking about creating with the hearts.  I created a piece of art (heart) for each individual tile.  They are respectively titled "truly", "madly", "deeply", and "love".  The pieces were constructed on 1.5" deep cradle board and attached to the tile.  They are coated with a glossy resin, which makes the colors "pop".  On the bottom of each piece, I added an antique chandelier crystal...well, because I just love some bling and it seemed like that was just what this piece needed.

This piece now has a home in England, but commissions are welcome.

“Forever”, Original Mixed Media Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

      "Forever"

This is a little mixed media piece, 6 X 6, that I created around Valentine's Day.  I used vintage sheet music from Romeo and Juliet, painted paper, wood, and paint.  I applied resin to the finished piece and it turned out beautiful!

This piece is sold, but send me an email if you'd like me to create something special for you or someone you love.  Comments are always welcome!

      "Truly, Madly, Deeply...Love"

For some reason, I've been on this kick to create "Heart" work!  Maybe it's because I have a son who was born on Valentine's Day and he's been on my mind lately, which is a good thing.  So, this is the latest big endeavor.  I found this frame with the tin attached, at a summer market. It appears to be an old ceiling tile that they stapled to the inside of the frame.  It was the ideal inspiration, as I love combining old things and new artwork.

This piece is available.  In total, the piece measures 29 X 29.  I tried to "shore up" the old frame so that it wasn't so rickety and now it hangs nicely.  It is truly a one-of-a-kind, unique piece of art.

"Troyce's Heart", original mixed media painting by Colorado artist, Donna L. Martin

      Troyce's Heart

This is an original mixed media piece that was specially created for a little baby boy that will be undergoing heart surgery next month.  He has been through such a rough time already, but he has a strong family and a contagious smile!

His Grandmother wanted me to create something special for his Mom and Dad as they travel this journey.  I was honored when she asked me to do this piece.  Through the years I've always felt close to her, even with all the twists and turns our lives have taken.  She and her family hold a special place in my heart.

I have no idea where the inspiration for this piece came from.  Even the colors are nothing like what I had originally planned.  Doug Collins, from Redeemwood provided the small wooden pallet that the heart was constructed on.  It seemed like the perfect special touch for this piece.  There are quite a few layers of paper, paint, molding paste, and burlap.  The round knob in the middle of the heart was made by a friend of mine, Wrenn Boulton, who does amazing fused glass pieces.  To me it symbolized fusion of the heart into one complete, beautiful creation...kind of like Troyce's heart.

This little piece will soon be on it's way to Texas.  I hope it will hold special meaning for Troyce's Mom, Dad, and Grandmother.  Please pray for this family and Troyce's upcoming surgery.

I would love to hear your feedback, so please email me with any comments or if you are interested in a commissoned piece!

Mixed Media Painting, "Fearless", by International Mixed Media Artist Donna L. Martin

      Fearless

If you’re like most people, you start out the year with the best intentions and make resolutions for the New Year.  It seems like by February, we feel like we have already slipped and by March or April, our best laid plans are past tense. Since our words give a voice to our soul, I decided that I would opt for a "word" this year instead of a resolution. I decided I would put my "word" into a piece of art, so "FEARLESS" was born!

This original mixed media painting is 10X10X1 and is done on a birchboard cradle. It is completed with a epoxy resin finish, eliminating the need for framing.

The price is $130/free shipping within the United States.
