Penny Rhodes...pastel on paper "Midnight in the Garden", 9x12
The latest addition to my "Victorian West Series" is a bit more victorian than west. "Midnight in the Garden" was inspired by photographs I had taken several years ago while visiting Longmont's historic Callahan House. This historic home and it's garden is a landmark and beautiful example of victorian architecture and victorian landscaping. I was enchanted with the light and shadow along the outside garden gate. I loved the contrasts of hard and soft, light and dark along the path, and feel that it echoes the contrast I'm trying to express in the Victorian West Era itself. The harsh life of the Western Frontier meets the soft romantic style of the 19th Century Victorian Age.
