This is a re-do of a painting a did a while back at the beginning of my "art career."  I gave it to my mother and she had it hanging in her spare room.  Gotta love Mom...it looked like a black hole hanging next to the dresser.  I was there after Easter & asked her if she wanted me to brighten it up.  She gave the okay, but said she liked the the little vase.  This is what I came up with.  A little brighter anyhow. "He Loves Me" by Terry Honstead

These cupcakes are getting bigger! The first one was 8x8 and sold, and then a 10x10 has returned from a show and now this 12x12 just finished,  I will use to demonstrate how to varnish a torn paper collage in my one day workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery June 2, 2012. This cupcake collage has paper I've painted, glued dried color spots of palette paper, vintage stamps, recycled book pages, old recipes, and  a California map as a background. You can see the orange highlight of my trip through Vacaville and Fairfield on the way to a Sonoma workshop. This is a good size for a workshop class to work on and will be used when I have a painted paper collage class. 

The one day June 2 class will be on a recycled magazine pages, torn paper class and we will all work on a high heel.

I have a collage exhibit of both torn paper and painted paper paintings at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center until June 28 and you can get dates and times HERE  and this is where the high heel collage sold. 

In the June 2 class we will work on a high heel similar to the one below.

"FOREVER BLUE" mixed media blue hydrangea painting by Carol Nelson

Forever Blue

I'm out of my comfort zone of earth tones with this one.  I had a terrible time trying to adjust the color.  My camera is not good at picking up mauve.  Some of the pinks are a little too vibrant, but you get the idea.

I hope you can see all the texture in the detail shot.  Once again, I used painted Viva paper towels for many of the petals.  I love how it looks like I cut up canvas and added it to the painting.

ONE DAY COLLAGE WORKSHOP, JUNE 2

I've just finished the torn paper collage painting yesterday to display during my one day workshop at the Dutch Art Gallery. I wanted to show an alternative to a canvas support. The above painting is on an American Easel Wood Panel and the collage is made from recycled magazines and an old letter, a hidden message on the heel "stiletto", find "Santa Fe" on a map scrap, and "Readin" is near the top (a throw back to my previous life as an elementary librarian. Part of the fun of a collage is tucking hidden messages for others to find that may or may not have a meaning.

In my class, we will all work on a high heel. I will supply the reference photo and will instruct on how to get the image transferred to your canvas. No art experience is necessary. Sign up to learn the basic collage techniques of torn paper painting.

When I give a workshop, I love to have a few door prizes to give to my students (to wake them up when they nod off or get on their cell phones). Oil painter and art teacher, Peggi Kroll Roberts, has donated some DVD's for door prizes. I have her DVD's and they are fabulous, fun instruction and I've taken two workshops with her this year. This painting, with it's copper, turquoise, purple and sienna tones embodies the colors of the Southwest.  They are my favorite colors and they show up over and over again in my work.  Fortunately, for me, lots of other people collect art in these desert hues.

The detail above shows the cube forms made with acrylic medium.  I like lots of texture in my work and this painting begs to be touched.
I signed the painting on the back, but not on the front because it can be hung horizontally or vertically.

I will give a one day torn paper collage workshop using torn paper recycled magazines, maps, found paper to produce a mixed media high heel collage on a 12" square canvas similar to the images above. There will be lectures, handouts, demonstrations and no prior art experience will be required. I will supply the image and design. The students supply the canvas supports and other supplies. After signing up for the class the supply list will be mailed. And guys, if you didn't want to collage a high heel I will have a boot or sneaker design available. We will cover supports, paper, supplies, choosing colors, varnish and other collage paintings that would be suitable done with this torn paper method.

The Dutch Art Gallery has scheduled Saturday Summer Workshops each Saturday until September. You can bring a sack lunch or eat at nearby restaurants in the shopping center. Classes will vary in price as some require an extra fee for a model. My collage class is $125.00.

"ORANGE DREAM" poppy floral mixed media by Carol Nelson

Orange Dream

What fun I had with this vibrant floral painting! The flowers, vase and some other areas are made from used paper towels that I had cleaned my brush on.

The diagonals in the piece give an edgy quality that adds to the drama of the piece.  The closeup shows the texture of the paper towel (I use Viva) that closely resembles the weave of the canvas.
How cool is that?!

The background of this painting was done quite awhile ago and
I was wondering from time to time what to do with it.  I took several
photos of my (model) daughter Sarah and this image seemed to fit
into the space rather nicely I think.  Of course it doesn't look like Sarah,
but actually that's the point.  I want my figures to be anyone and
leave it up to you to create the person.

Sail Away by Terry Honstead

This is a painting that I started a long time ago.  I was not sure how to finish it so it just sat there.  I think I am done with it now.  I added some golds to the sky and water and finished up with my collage leaves.  The land was done before.  I used paint that I had painted on parchment paper and then pealed off to use after it had dried.  It was fun putting the many colors together to form rocks, dirt, and tree stump.  If you are interested, you may reach me at:   honstead@paulbunyan.net.

This series of paintings have been experiments with orchids, purples, blues with orange and red highlights, small paintings that used a Venetian Plaster foundation on canvas and board. I like working on the above foundation on American Easel Birchwood because you can work thick with the texture without danger of the pieces cracking or falling off. Spring in the Rockies

This painting is on hold until mid June when I will find out if it has been juried into the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition later this year.

I haven't entered this prestigious show for several years because one of the requirements is that the painting be on paper.  That means glass, matting and framing too.  Much more of a hassle than painting on canvas.

"SUMMER HAZE" 12049, mixed media contemporary landscape - Carol Nelson Fine Art

Summer Haze

This painting is a demo piece I did for the tree workshop from a couple days ago.  One of the unique things about this painting is the use of buckshot paper.

My class went nuts over this stuff.  I picked it up at a target shooting range near my house.  The paper is actually paper targets that are shot full of holes - makes great trees and shrubs.

I've completed this rooster collage painting this week for the FWCAC show in Fort Worth. I've sold 4 collage paintings from the show and needed to cover a bare spot. The red area is collage from my hand painted papers and the feather area is from found papers like vintage books, music sheets, or crossword puzzles. The background is a Texas map with a few postal stamps for more design. The show will be on exhibit until June 28, 2012.
