Are you always wondering about the correct spelling of GREY, GRAY? I found a simple explanation and an easy way to remember and I want to share it with you.

Carol Marine talks about the importance of GRAY's in her Art Byte tutorial Saturation and Color Mixing. This is an excellent tutorial and I've watched it several times and have done some of the color chart exercises and I've found them to be very helpful in my stage of oil painting (early). Some of the Art Bytes are free and some have a small charge but they go into your library to view at any time. Enjoy some non fattening art bytes.

Paper collage is part of the clothes, umbrella and even the hair piece. The background has been stenciled. The challenge with this painting was the white face - even though a geisha's face is very white it doesn't read well and so it needed a bit of a glaze.

The word rune has many meanings. Runes can be symbols of language and also stones used in meditation and prognostication. A rune is also a mystery. This series features the organic shapes, outlines and marks made by imbedding a variety stones, rocks and gravel in acrylic media and then removing them. This painting just won the top spot in a collage competition on Fine Art America - woo hoo! Today, I delivered this one, and 9 other paintings, to the gallery in Fort Collins, Colorado, (Old Town ART & Framery) where my work will be featured with a reception from 6pm to 9pm this Friday.

I had never seen the gallery before and I was very pleasantly surprised. The back of the space houses a complete frame shop, and the front is a lovely gallery space with exposed brick walls, and the warm, stylish decorating of Jim Benest, the Art Czar.

Jim has collected a group of artists that definitely reflects his
contemporary taste. I was worried my work would be a little too
abstract, but it fit right in with the vibe of this vibrant gallery in the heart of Fort Collins' Old Town gallery district.

Paint It Before You Eat It

I have an online gallery at Daily Paintworks and someone is always offering a challenge to paint. This challenge was presented by Carol Marine before Valentine's Day and you could paint from her photo or provide something of your own. I decided to paint from her photo and the only downside I didn't get to eat the goodies after I finished painting it this afternoon and gosh, darn, those little pleated papers were hard to paint. Many of the posted challenges were so much better than mine but that's the fun to see the other painters interpretation and I probably would have never chosen anything with a little frilly paper to start with. Want to give your art journey a stretch? Come try a challenge with us and you don't have to be a member to join in a challenge and there are no deadlines...so now, will you submit to the challenge? This painting is exciting (to me). I love the color harmony. It's a new technique I discovered by accident - I'm always experimenting you know. Usually I'm very open about my techniques, but I'm going to be stingy about this one.

I might present it to my workshop artists. Right now I'm too enthralled with it to share.

I noticed that on my iPad, the image at the top of this post looked too dark. Above is a lighter version. Variations in monitors makes it hard to judge how much light/dark to have on the photo, especially with metallic paints.

This painting gets it's name from the musical symbols printed in the piece. Unlike grand opera, which is always tragic, operettas are kind of like the chick flick of opera. There is romance, music and dancing and more of a light humorous approach.

This painting reminded me of a playbill pasted on a wall somewhere. It has textural elements such as Egyptian papyrus paper, printed papers, and strips of painted watercolor paper.

The close color harmony of the palette, primarily metallic tones of copper and bronze, with a touch of lavender and red oxide, makes this painting soothing. The dramatic value (dark vs. light) shifts make it a dynamic piece.

There's a touch of pink that is a mystery because I don't know where it came from. I am not a fan of pink, but it works in this composition.

I am excited about this piece. I consider it a keystone painting, in that I have never successfully done anything quite like this before. It could signal a new direction I may want to pursue.

It does not fit into my current series of geologic abstracts or forest abstracts. It is totally nonrepresentational.

I would say it is a celebration of texture, somewhat muted color, and composition. Creating a painting like this somewhat like a Japanese Zen garden, where every stone, every plant, is carefully placed to create a harmonious environment.

As I worked on this painting, it was a matter of placing the various patterns and texture elements, then building up layers until it looked harmonious, or Zen-like, to me. There were several points during which I had to step away and do something else, so that when I came back to the painting again, I saw it with fresh eyes.

As with all abstracts, I did not have a vision in my mind of the completed painting. Instead, the painting evolved as it was being created.

Surprisingly, my husband did not say YUK when he saw it - he's not a fan of abstract. He even came up with the title, which I kind of like because of the lettering and the complexity of the piece.

Divine Intervention

I like these abstracted tree forms. The best way to paint these is to load up your brush, hold the brush between you index finger and thumb, and drag it across the paper moving your whole arm, not your wrist.

It's also easier to start at the end of a branch and work toward the trunk, pulling TOWARD you.

If you support the brush in a normal fashion, the result is much more controlled, but may look stilted depending on how skilled you are at drawing tree branches. I use fluid acrylics, so the pigment load on the brush is quite loose and liquid.

This was one of the first times I used image transfer in one of my paintings -- the transfer was not very successful but I liked how it looked and so I took a number of other papers and sayings and combined them into this acrylic collage. I love the quotes -- in particular I remind myself of the one " no one can make you feel inferior without your consent" from time to time.

February Morning

I used textured wall paper for the trees. I like the textured look of the paper. The background was applied thickly with a palette knife.

This palette is different for me - there's no orange! Well, there's orange, with white and yellow, in the sky color, but that's really an orange TINT.

Some truly amazing results can be achieved using this technique! I drew the man with charcoal, then painted him with acrylic and collaged him into the painting. This is my very first blog although I have followed a number of artists for years -- also I am new to CAFI and have just spent several hours learning how to post on that site - and I clearly have a lot to learn. I have added one of my more recent paintings - it is acrylic and I have used papers that I have created in the collage. It is part of my Wonky Pots series of paintings.

"Portal"

Sometimes, when you go back through old paintings done years earlier, you fine one that would benefit from the knowledge you have attained during the intervening years.

That was the case with this paper collage painting. I really wish I had taken a "before" picture. Compositionally, this is a better painting. Color wise, it is a hell of a better painting, if I do say so myself.

Originally, I had a muted blue, green, brown and gray palette. Blech. I made the blue more purple, the green more turquoise, and the brown more orange. Added a tiny bit of red. Those warm tones on a predominantly cool toned painting really give it sparkle.

Burnished

This geologic abstract has a mat that I painted with two shades of copper acrylic. Since there is copper and gold paint in the painting, I thought it really enhanced the work.

The bevel on the mat was white. I painted the bevel black and let the paint smudge out on to the mat a bit. It looks very much like the mat is made from copper metal.

I took several photos of one seagull in Carmel, California with
the intent to paint something unbeknownst to me at the time,

And I must say a little extra bling added by Meaghen and her mom Cindy. This is a torn paper portrait collage of one of my granddaughters that I began as a demo in the Grandbury LGAA workshop HERE. That's her dad with the collage, Brad: Peace but Meaghen can be seen in the slide show below. That was the last of November and before the final varnish today I gave it to Meaghen to add some of her personal ideas around the edges or anywhere she chose.

Well..we were at the Supreme Court building in Washington DC.,
so I thought an appropriate title would be 'Holding Court' as that is what
they appear to be doing in an abstract sense of the phrase.
Somehow this photo emerged with more ochre colors, and
I loved the difference in this one and 'Who's Calling' that I have
posted previously. I love the light and shadow!
