Sandstone, 12074, by Carol Nelson

Sandstone

I did this painting a while ago on canvas glued and stretched over a panel.  It was an odd ball size (21x21 inches) so I didn't have a frame for it.

The other day, I noticed it sitting, rather forlornly, in my studio.  I thought it's time I get this thing mounted.  I'm very proud of the way my presentation LOOKS, but it WEIGHS a ton!

The painting is on a 1/4 inch MDF panel, which is mounted on a 1/2 inch panel with another 1/2 inch spacer for a "floating" look.
I used my new table saw to cut the frame pieces which are glued on to the supporting panel.

hammered copper spray paint on another painting
I know you can't tell from the photo, but I used some cool spray paint on the frame.  It's called hammered copper by Rustoleum and really looks like it.

As I was cleaning up from the spray job, I noticed how beautiful the paint looked on PAPER.

I sprayed an old painting that I had already partially deconstructed ( I love that term - it means I just ripped off some parts of the original collage).

To my surprise, the painted parts of the painting, "took" the hammered copper spray paint, but the raw paper exposed from tearing, did not!  I'm thinking I may have to explore this further!

"Look" by Terry Honstead

This 24 x 16 mixed media piece was done starting with joint compound on the support.  I used a roller  on it to add a texture and then waited for it to dry.  I didn't like how bumpy it turned out, so I took a chisel to it and took off the top edges.  It added wonderful light squiggles in the titan buff background.  I then transfered a picture that was taken of a rusty metal ornament on a brick wall.  I used a snake skin for the branch and hornet's nest fiber for the birds nest.  I also added parts of an old piece of lace, a doily, some music, writing, a broken piece of leather, some letters, some pages from and old book, some feathers, and an old dried up leaf.  It was a lot of fun designing this painting.  I was going to put some scrolls on in a couple of places with built up texture, but decided to go with oil based colored pencils instead.  To see more you can go to:  http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com or email me at:honstead@paulbunyan.net .

In my previous two blog posts I've shown the flowers painted in the Friday and Saturday workshop days with Nancy Medina in Irving, TX.  I don't have all my notes typed up yet and I've signed up for another one with Nancy in November. Also on my fall schedule is workshops with Vicki McMurry, Don Sahli, and Harold Frontz.   Workshop supply lists are being checked and ordered and oh, hum, trying to sort through some kitchen cabinets. Not so much fun as trying to learn to paint in oils.
Don studied with Sergei Bongart and I'm now reading the book about his life by Balcomb and I'm fascinated.
A Jerry's order did arrive this week with a new art supply I learned about from one of Nancy's students. Maybe you already know but it's a cool tool for signing your name in an oil painting. Here's the link: The Amazing Wipe-Off tool.

"Angel" by Terry Honstead

This is a 16 x 24 mixed media on a board.  I started by putting the texture onto the gessoed board and then used colors that are a stretch for me.  Pinks and purples are not usually found in my work, but this was a challenge and it took me a while to decide where to go with it.  If you are interested in this or in seeing more of my work, it can be found at :  http://terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com  or email me at:    honstead@paulbunyan.net.

"Copper River" 12073 mixed media geologic abstract by Carol Nelson

Copper River

This painting has metal leaf, prepared tyvek, and corrugated paper in a mixed media composition on a cradled panel.  I created a piece of tyvek that had many holes in it so that the metal leaf would peak through the holes.

I always like the illusion of looking into a hole with something shiny at the bottom.

This little gem comes ready to hang, or you could jazz it up even more with a floater frame.

This painting is #6 in my Queen Of Light Series.  It is a major mixed media creation done on 16x20 textured stretched canvas.  Acrylic paints & mediums, metal(gold) leaf (and all that THAT entails!) alcohol inks and collage.  Definitely a build it up...tear it down and seal, seal, seal type of thing.  Still need to apply the final varnish.  Purchase Info Here! or visit my BLOG:  Donna Holdsworth Contemporary Art.  Thank you!

"Self Portrait" Graphite And Conte Sketch By Donna Holdsworth

©2012Donna Holdsworth
I am working on a painting, and since it is being uncooperative, I decided to do a sketch of myself to use as a profile pic.  Graphite & Conte crayon.  It seems like the mouth is off just a bit.  I have a small mouth and am used to using my daughter as a model.  Her mouth is bigger than mine & she has mega lips so it seems like somethings missing. That and a few wrinkles I guess! ;)  It's close though!  Oh well, back to my painting I must go!  Visit my BLOG:  Donna Holdsworth Contemporary Art.  Thank you!

"Journey" by Terry Honstead

This mixed media 16 x 24 x 1 in. piece is modeled after an old world map.  I wanted it to look like a treasure map and boys who are into pirates would love this!  There is a lot of texture to the background.  If interested you can get prints at:   terry-honstead.artistwebsites.com or contact me at:   honstead@paulbunyan.net

My Painting on Cover of new Blick Catalog - Carol Nelson

Color Quad

I'm excited to share with you this new Blick Catalog cover. If you're a customer of Blick Art Materials, you'll probably get one in the mail soon. If you look carefully at my painting, Color Quad, you will see that the bottom right quarter panel of this quadtych was used as the cover image.  How cool is that?!

I have no idea how Blick came across this image of mine, or why they chose to use it (perhaps they recognized genius).  lol

We had to jump through quite a few hoops to make this happen, however, because Blick needed a high resolution image of the painting. I had already sold the painting and the only image I had on my computer was too small for printing.

Fortunately, I was able to contact the owner of the painting, and he agreed to send the original painting to Blick so they could get a high res photo of it.

Ironically, the original painting was only about 300 miles from the Blick offices in Illinois.  I sent the owner of the painting one of my Gemstone Series painting as a thank you for his efforts on my behalf.

A few years ago, the Blick Art Materials folks had me paint a painting on their newly marketed quad packs - 4 gallery wrap canvases sold in a pack of four.  Below is the painting I did for them that was featured in their catalog.

The nice thing about that painting is that Blick supplied the canvases, and then they bought the painting!
